Itaru Sakai

Born in Osaka, Sakai began piano at age four and composed his first piano piece at six. In high school he played flute and piccolo and composed for ensembles and wind orchestras. He completed graduate studies in composition at Osaka College of Music.
Sakai has composed various works including fanfares for national athletic meetings and commissioned pieces for the 40th, 50th, and 60th anniversaries of the Nara Prefecture Wind Orchestra Federation. His compositions have been commissioned by professional wind orchestras such as the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra and Naniwa Orchestral Winds, as well as by amateur community bands and school bands.
Since the 81st National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament in 2009, he has been responsible for arranging the entrance march. He is a recipient of the 25th Japan Wind and Percussion Music Academy Award and has won the JBA Shitaya Prize in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018. Sakai is a member of the "Kyo-en," a group dedicated to 21st-century wind music. He currently (2025) serves as part-time lecturer at Osaka College of Music and visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts.
