Japan's Daily Training Method for Band
SUPER SOUND TRAINING (SST) presents the essential components of ensemble sound development utilized in elementary, secondary and amateur band clubs in Japan. This collection of studies is organized in selective time increments for application in as few as 5 minutes daily! SST also provides video links for observation of the studies in use.
Though the SST material seems technically simple, perfecting and blending individual and ensemble sound requires consistent, devoted effort. Such exercises are the building blocks of ideal band performance. With basic training students learn the art of correcting small details as a group, as each member learns that all players are equally important, and that great care must be given to produce the following basics at the highest possible level:
- Full clear tone with proper air support
- An even tone across the range of the instrument at various dynamics
- Appropriate embouchure, proper method of articulation
- Accuracy of various rhythms, and mastery of scales (ideally in the full range of the instrument)
- An awareness of balance and how one's part fits in the whole at any given point
- How to play every note in tune within each key (equal temperament and just intonation), listening around from those adjacent to you all the way to the other groups of ABCD
