Delicate, beautiful soft dynamics shape the magical atmosphere of this masterpiece.
Composed as a test piece for the 2024 All Japan Band Competition.
The premiere recording was conducted by Kazuyoshi Akiyama with the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra at Subaru Hall in Osaka.
The following changes have been made from the original set piece version:
(1) Minor changes to articulation, etc.
(2) Changes in dynamics in the latter half of rehearsal letter [H].
Performance Notes:
One of the most memorable lessons from the late Kiyoyuki Tsujii, who taught me conducting during my student days, was his constant reminder: ?gMake p beautiful, and pp even more beautiful.?h I would be delighted if performers would approach pp in this piece with that mindset.
At the end of the piccolo and 1st flute parts, the prescribed test piece range was exceeded, so alternative notes an octave lower are written as cues. Please play the higher part if possible.
For the trumpet mute, a straight mute is assumed, but using a cup mute in measures 67?69 is also acceptable.
For the tuba, some parts are written in octaves. If there are two or more players, please play both notes; if only one player, the lower note should generally be played. However, if a smaller instrument is used or in a small ensemble, playing the higher note may produce a better overall blend. Please choose the version that best supports your band's sonority.
