Lights Up! was written as an opening number that also serves as an introduction to the instruments of the band, evoking the style of a Broadway musical overture.
In the first half of the piece, each instrumental section steps into the ?gspotlight?h in turn. For the performers, this provides an opportunity to fully showcase the unique character and appeal of their section; for the audience, it creates a sense of anticipation?the feeling of a vibrant beginning.
The latter half centers on tutti passages featuring the full ensemble. The distinctive sonority of the wind band heightens the sense of exhilaration, making a brilliant and memorable opening to the concert.
A parenthesized fermata has been placed over the timpani roll following the introduction. This moment provides an excellent opportunity for each band to incorporate its own special staging ideas?for example, the introduction and entrance of the conductor, or another important announcement.
In the first half of the piece, the individual instrumental solos are marked with the instruction ?gstand.?h However, in the second half, which centers on full ensemble (tutti) passages, no such indication is given intentionally. Add your own touches in the latter half to lift the excitement of the concert.
This work was composed in 2026 as part of a joint project between the Kobe College School of Music and Brain Music. It received its world premiere in February of the same year, performed by the Kobe College Wind Orchestra under the direction of Associate Professor Satoshi Yagisawa.
