"Gichigamiin" is a word in the language of the Ojibwe, a Native American people, meaning "Great Lakes." The vast expanse of these waters covers an area roughly equivalent to Japan's main island of Honshu and is so magnificent in scale that it is often referred to as "a freshwater sea." For this reason, the work has the subtitle "The Five Freshwater Seas," otherwise known as the Five Great Lakes.
Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario - each of these five lakes possesses a distinct character. Their appearances shift with the changing seasons and weather, continually inspiring awe and reverence.
The Great Lakes support a rich and diverse ecosystem and have long served as vital waterways for transportation and trade, contributing to the development of civilizations across the American and Canadian borders.
To the Ojibwe people, the Great Lakes are far more than striking natural landscapes - they are sacred realms that lie at the very core of their spiritual and cultural identity. The vast, serene surfaces of the lakes bring abundance, while deep fog, rough waves, and profound silence have given rise to countless legends, forming a wellspring of ancestral memory.
This composition seeks to express the majesty and mythical presence of the lakes through music. Gentle, shimmering surfaces, starlit stillness, and wildly surging waves shift organically, eventually converging into a deepening passage that resembles a prayer. I hope that listeners will sense the timeless presence carried by these waters, and feel the world of the "Great Lakes" rise vividly within their hearts.
