The title Animae Canticum comes from Latin and means "Song of the Soul."
The clarinet solo introduction and the trumpet in measure 12 form the main theme of the piece. These are followed by secondary themes, such as those introduced in measures 20 and 27, creating a structured development throughout the work.
The title "Song of the Soul" reflects the composer's interest in a melody that feels simple and heartfelt, like a folk song. The clarinet introduction embodies this idea. The theme in measure 12 features harmonic progressions that shift between major and minor, expressing a sense of "fluctuation" or "wavering." I hope performers will pay close attention to the tone color of the harmonies. It should be played with an image of quiet yet powerful resonance.
