"The Washington Post March" was composed for an awards ceremony honoring winners of an essay contest sponsored by The Washington Post newspaper.
Premiered in Washington, D.C., in 1889 by John Philip Sousa and the United States Marine Band before an audience of 25,000, the march became an immediate success and remains one of Sousa's most famous works.
