A dignified march embodying a grounded presence and profound inner passion.
Commissioned in 2024 by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band, the work was premiered on February 21, 2025 at Sumida Triphony Hall (the 174th Annual Concert), conducted by Executive Officer LTC Masanori Shibata, Deputy Commander of the band. The title was refined in collaboration with Shibata, based on newly written verses by the poet Hiroaki Hirai.
A heavenly breath soars, shimmering, becoming a spear;
A spear that cleaves through the darkness.
Resound, resound?life itself shines;
O spear of light, illuminate my path?
O spear of light, illuminate us all.
"Amatsuhoko" (a flash of light?lightning or a thunderbolt) becomes a single path through the darkness. Protected, sustained, and guided by that light, we proceed along the path it reveals. This march embodies a grounded presence, a dignified spirit, and a profound yet restrained inner passion. It is also composed with a prayer that beautiful spirit and peace may endure.
The Maestoso at [I] quotes a portion of the national anthem Kimigayo, symbolizing the power of enduring tradition. For this reason, it is also possible to perform the piece strictly as a march by omitting [H] and proceeding directly to [J].
